Efficient swimming forms evolved through trial and error and are taught through instructions and correction. The more subtle skill(s) are a function of distinct abilities to feel lift, drag and vortex relationships on the propulsive surfaces. These skills may be very natural to a swimmer or may require many years of practice to develop. Coaches and teachers will learn how to help their students sequentially develop the forms and learn the more discreet skills.
