“More Than a Game:” Impact of The First Tee Life Skills Programs on Positive Youth Development
We report results evaluating the effectiveness of The First Tee in teaching life skills and core values. Positive youth development is likely to occur when young people are (a) engaged in a desired activity within an appropriate environment (context), (b) surrounded by caring adults and a positive community (external resources), and (c) learning skills important for managing life situations (internal assets). The First Tee is a youth development program that has these components in place. Through interviews with youth, coaches, and parents, our data show that The First Tee is having a positive impact on young people’s psychosocial development.
