2005 Research Consortium Scholar Lecture: Knowing and Doing During Sport Competition – Are We Reinforcing Tactics? |
2005 Scholar Lecturer, Sue L. McPherson, is a professor in the Physical Therapy Department at Western Carolina University in North Carolina. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Georgia Southern University and the Doctor of Philosophy from Louisiana State University. She is a Fellow in the Research Consortium and has served as chair of NASPE’s Motor Development Academy and on several AAHPERD committees. She has presented her work at several national and international conferences and is a regular reviewer for scholarly publications in motor behavior, psychology, and sport psychology. Her line of research examines the development of cognitive strategies and motor performance from youth to older adulthood. She has created several tools to study performers’ cognitive strategies and motor skills in natural environments. McPherson is most well known for her use of verbal reports as data to examine thought processes utilized by performers during simulated and real sport competition. Her numerous publications include theory development about tactical knowledge and sport expertise.
McPherson will present recent theory regarding long-term memory adaptations with expertise. She will provide research examples to support this theory. McPherson will also make several recommendations on how teachers and coaches may reinforce the development of performers’ tactical skills. |
