The 2005 C.H. McCloy Lecturer, Brenda L. Bredemeier, Ph.D., is an associate professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Bredemeier’s research program is dedicated to developing knowledge that can help physical education teachers and coaches promote social, moral, and civic development in the young people they serve.
In her lecture, “Excellence Made Good: Exploring Moral and Civic Character,” Bredemeir will expand the concept of excellence beyond physical performance to encompass excellence of character, and will feature an examination of the relations among moral and civic character and physical activity involvement. A review of past and current research and practice will form a springboard for considering future praxis.
Formerly the founder and Co-Director of the Mendelson Center for Sport, Character, and Community at the University of Notre Dame, Bredemeier is widely published and has delivered numerous invited lectures and workshops, many of them in international arenas. She serves as Section Editor for the International Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology and is a founding Executive Board member of the Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology. Prior to her work at Notre Dame, Bredemeier was a professor and dean of the College of Letters and Science at the University of California at Berkeley. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education, the Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology (AAASP), and the Research Consortium of AAHPERD. She is an AAASP certified sport psychologist and former intercollegiate athlete and coach. |
