Historical Perspectives: Boycott to Bunn
Only weeks after hosting the first integrated Sugar Bowl since 1956, New Orleans lost the opportunity to host the American Football League All-Star Game when the 21 African American All-Star players voted to boycott the game. Trying to rebound from the city’s practice of segregation, this paper will highlight the attempts made by New Orleans to represent themselves for future events in the city. Tour the life of John Bunn from his student life with James Naismith, his 34 years of basketball coaching at the collegiate level, and his influence on the game as coach, Editor of The Basketball Rules Guide and first chairman of the Basketball Hall of Fame.
