Olympism, Olympic Education, and the 21st Century |
In the late 1800’s Pierre de Coubertin championed an Olympic dream. He viewed enjoyment, fairness, respect for diversity, participation, human development, excellence, leadership and peace as forming a desirable foundation for the education of the world’s children and youth. Over 100 years has passed since Pierre de Coubertin’s first ‘modern’ Olympics, yet many of the children and youth of today exhibit inactive, unhealthy lifestyles - lifestyles far removed from de Coubertin’s Olympic ideals. This presentation will provide an overview of the work being carried to develop school and community programs that emphasize Pierre de Coubertin’s Olympic Education ideals. |
