Body Weight Issues In Physical Education |
The focus of this presentation is to share research findings regarding elementary physical education teachers’ perceptions of the problems associated with overweight children. Surveys were sent to elementary physical education teachers in Tennessee (N = 239) to examine their perceptions of current and ideal body weight for children; class dynamics; curriculum issues; assessment of body composition; and potential collaborative efforts with other school personnel. Although two-thirds of the respondents indicated obesity is becoming more prevalent and 97% indicated they promote active lifestyle exercise, fewer (56%) thought the school an ideal site to treat weight problems in children. |
