Pedagogy: Work Sample Methodology: Assessing the Preservice Teacher's Effectiveness |
The assessment of preservice teaching in physical education over the past 25 years has included (a) direct observation of teacher and student behaviors, (b) evaluations of lesson and unit plans, and (c) the use of portfolios. These methods have formed the basis for judgments made by teacher education faculty about the readiness of preservice teachers to teach. Despite the utility of these methods, they assess only the process of teaching, not the product. In the 1990’s, educational reform movements throughout the United States have stressed that teachers ought to be judged by the outcomes achieved by their students. Within this context, the public and politicians have increasingly, asked the question "How ready are our teachers to teach?" One way institutions can demonstrate preservice teacher proficiency is through Teacher Work Sample Methodology (TWSM). Teacher work samples include a unit of instruction where student performance data are gathered and interpreted. TWSM is designed to align assessment with instructional objectives with the goal of providing information relevant to instruction and achievement. Central to the methodology is the view of teachers as reflective practitioners. The purposes of this symposium are (a) to describe the political conditions that have made TWSM a graduation requirement in some states, (b) to review the findings using of TWSM in general education, and (c) to report the results from two Universities that have redesigned their physical education preparation programs to incorporate TWSM. |
