Assessment of Preservice Teachers Using Teacher Work Sample Methodology

Jacqueline D. Goodway, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH

Drawing on the experience of The Ohio State University's first generation of teacher work samples in secondary settings, this study reports the findings for 12 preservice teachers in elementary physical education. The students were placed in practicums for 10 weeks. As a result of findings from the earlier study, this investigation used community to provide a link between student needs and learning goals. Community mapping tasks required students to investigate and determine the available resources and life experiences of individuals living in the local communities in which their schools were situated. Data used in this study included (a) measures from teacher developed tests including pre-post measures of student learning in cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains, (b) teacher perceptions of the TWSM, and (c) cooperating teaching perceptions of the use of TWSM by their preservice teachers. This presentation wil discuss the significant differences found between the secondary and elementary settings in terms of utilization of TWSM and documentation of student outcomes.
