Teachers must know their content in order to teach it. Lack of content knowledge (CK) in teachers remains one of the most challenging tasks for teacher education. We examined how physical activity CK is taught to pre-service teachers in the USA, China, and England. Our findings suggest that teacher education programs that rely on teaching CK by asking students to play or perform the content, are not teaching the specialized CK necessary for teaching competence.
