Asian Americans have been a part of American society for more than a century, but few have studied their experiences in sports. Widely spread stereotypes and misconceptions about Asian Americans continue to exist. One of the most commonly affixed stereotypes on Asian Americans includes the idea that they are studious, intelligent, and docile. Interestingly enough, this notion contrasts what dominant forms of popular American sports highlight. The ongoing invisibility and silence of Asian Americans in sports perpetuate cultural misunderstandings about this group. In reality, do Asian Americans resist participation in dominant forms of sports? What are the myths and the realities of sport culture of Asian Americans? What kind of cultural meanings do Asian Americans produce by participating in sports? This presentation offers a glimpse at the realities of Asian Americans by using sports as a lens through which we can see and understand society and culture.
