706 Taking Physical Education to the Elementary Classroom: A Success Story

Saturday, April 2, 2011: 11:45 AM-12:45 PM
Convention Center: Ballroom 20BC
NASPE/Preschool and Elementary PE
Speaker: Kim Ward, Indianapolis Public Schools, Indianapolis, IN
Attendees of this presentation will be able to describe how an elementary movement literacy program improved students’ academic performances. The physical education teacher created weekly lessons for the classroom teacher to direct students in purposeful physical activity in place of seat/classroom-based literacy activities. The curriculum utilizes stations addressing student literacy and known brain-enhancing development movements such as bilateral movements. Suggestions will be given for developing and running a similar program to advocate for physical education.
