It is often assumed that people know how to compete. Our own work with athletes and coaches, however, suggests that a mental distortion of the meaning of competition is often at the root of suboptimal performance, ethical violations, and reduced long-term enjoyment. In this workshop, we present newly developed models of the advantages of true competition. We then use the mental maps to provide insights into how to reclaim competition for excellence, ethics, and enjoyment.
