Conclusions This presentation will provide an overview of the evaluation of youth fitness assessments and describe methods used for establishing criterion referenced standards. After a brief introduction and comparison of commonly used norm- and criterion-referenced evaluation systems, including their advantages and disadvantages, major steps and key issues related to criterion-referenced standard setting will be described in detail. The presentation will then focus on the specific issues and challenges involved in developing a criterion-referenced evaluation system for aerobic fitness and body composition for youth. A variety of standard setting and validation methods will be described but emphasis will be placed on the use of Receiver Operator Characteristic (ROC) curves since these were used for the revised FITNESSGRAM standards. The presentation will also describe the use of a primer-field test centered equating method to improve classification agreement among different field tests. Examples will be provided to illustrate how this method was used within FITNESSGRAM to standardize agreement in fitness standards.
