Women’s experiences in alternative or extreme sports have been relatively unexplored in the sport literature. Rock climbing is one example of a sport that has been traditionally defined as “masculine” (Young, 1997). The purpose of this study was to investigate the experiences of high-level female rock climbers. Qualitative analysis of interviews revealed three general themes: complying, questioning, and resisting hegemonic gender norms. In this presentation, a discussion and analysis of these themes will be presented.
