PETE Profile: Putting the Pieces Together

Susan Lynn, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL

University teacher educators play a critical role in preparing K-12 teachers for the 21st century. As Darling-Hammond (2000, p. 166) recognizes, “the extent and quality of teacher education matter for teacher's effectiveness, perhaps now more than ever.” Identifying characteristics of the teacher education professorate can provide important insights for teacher education. Through the papers presented in this symposium an updated profile of Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) faculty in the United States was revealed. Dr. Susan Lynn will provide a summation of these findings related to PETE's (a) personal characteristics, (b) education and experience, (c) actual and preferred work responsibilities, (d) professional involvement, and (e) perceptions concerning the current status of teacher education.
