Sociocultural Symposium: Students’ Motivations and Attitudes Regarding Academic and Athletic Achievement
Examine academics and athletics in America associated with historical injustices of yesteryear and contemporary realities of today will be examined. This is done with discourse around issues of several interrelated topics. First, the Brown et al. vs. the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, case is used as a point of historic reference to elaborate on the often-divergent realities in education and sport for black and white Americans. Second, discussion how prevalent race-sport stereotypes can impact the aspirations of youth toward or away from varied athletic pursuits, often at the expense of their academic success. Third, elaboration on the study of African American and White American students’ beliefs about their own (in-group) and each other (out-group) ethnic groups’ aspirations for athletic pursuits. Lastly, examine the academic and athletic motivations and attitudes of students from ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds, who were randomly sampled from physical education classes at high schools in a large urban school district. Findings reveal significant differences across diverse groups of students in their motivations and attitudes toward academic and athletic pursuits. Implications of these studies' findings are discussed as to culturally relevant physical education pedagogies for urban schools.
