Problems Associated With the Profile of Mood States: Any Other Alternatives?

Eddie T. C. Lam, Cleveland State University, Cleveland, OH and Siu Yin Cheung, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong, China

The Profile of Mood States (POMS) was developed in 1971 and has been widely used for measuring distinct mood states in medical patients, athletes, and normal population in general. The POMS has 65 items that measures six identifiable moods or feelings: Tension-Anxiety (T), Depression-Dejection (D), Anger-Hostility (A), Vigor-Activity (V), Fatigue-Inertia (F), and Confusion-Bewilderment (C). An additional unscored dimension, Friendliness (Fr), is also included. In spite of its popularity, the POMS is simply a preliminary scale (i.e., exploratory in nature) and has never been validated since. Without validation, the results generated from the numerous studies using the POMS were not persuasive. The purpose of this study was to examine the factor structure of the seven-factor 65-item POMS using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) in two different occasions. Participants were students from two Asian cities. The Windows LISREL 8.53 (du Toit, du Toit, Jöreskog, & Sörbom, 2002) computer program was used to analyze the data. The fit indices of Sample 1 (N = 961) were: GFI = .79, CFI = .81, IFI = .81, RMSEA = .053, and SRMR = .068. The fit indices of Sample 2 (N = 962) were: GFI = .74, CFI = .80, IFI = .80, RMSEA = .061, and SRMR = .090. All these indicated that the POMS provided a poor fit to the data. The results were consistent with previous research studies that cast doubts about the psychometric properties of the POMS. To seek for alternatives, CFA was conducted to a brief version of the POMS (POMS-SBV, Cheung & Lam, 2004) using the above procedures. The fit indices of Sample 1 were: GFI = .87, CFI = .89, IFI = .89, RMSEA = .055, and SRMR = .044. The fit indices of Sample 2 were: GFI = .83, CFI = .90, IFI = .90, RMSEA = .06, and SRMR = .046. Other than the GFI, all fit indices indicated that the POMS-SBV provided a reasonable fit to the data. In conclusion, the 38-item POMS-SBV is a better choice than the original POMS in terms of construct validity and time efficiency in test administration. Nevertheless, further studies with diverse population are necessary to examine the psychometric properties of the POMS-SBV.
