Using Constraints to Design Developmentally Appropriate Activities for Physical Education
The new motor development standards for undergraduate education propose that practitioners in physical education should understand and apply motor development theory as the basis for planning developmentally appropriate activities, but motor development theory is often an abstract concept to physical educators, unconnected to instructional planning. This workshop will emphasize the use of Newell’s 1986 model of constraints in effective planning of classroom movement tasks. Activities will include basic movement skills, manipulative skills that involve net games and invasion games, striking skills, dance, and gymnastics.
