Adherence to a Physical Fitness Program by Individuals With Physical Disabilities

Patrick J. DiRocco, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, La Crosse, WI and Jennifer E. Rivera, Livonia Public Schools, Michigan, Beverly Hills, MI

This study identified factors that influenced exercise adherence among individuals with physical disabilities in the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Adult Therapy Physical Fitness Program (UWL/AT). four surveys were used in this study: Self Motivation Inventory(SMI)(Dishman, Ickles,& Morgan, 1980), Commitment to Physical Activity (CPA)(Gruger, Corbin & Nielson, 1984), Perceived Barrier to Exercise(PBE)(Tappe, Duda & Menges-Erhnwald, 1989), and the UWL/AT Survey constructed by the researcher. Participants were categorized as adherers(AD,n= 10)or dropouts(DO,n= 10). The reponse rate was 67% for both groups. Results of this study found that the SMI did not accurately predict exercise adherence in this sample of perticipants. There was a negative correlation found between the PBE and the CPA surveys. Results of the UWL/AT survey revealed significant differences (p<.05) between AD and DO educational level (.000) and whether participants were referred to the program by their doctor(.04). AD reported that they continued to participate due to: 1)socialization and 2)the ability to perform activities of daily living as a result of the program.
