Special Populations Symposium—Test Accommodations for Individuals With Disabilities
The 1997 Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires that students with disabilities be included in assessments and provided with needed test accommodations. Accommodations are changes in materials or procedures that provide access to instruction and effective assessment for students with disabilities. They are designed to enable students to learn without the impediment of their disabilities, and to be able to demonstrate their knowledge and skills to the best of their ability. While considerable research efforts and attention have been given to understanding test accommodations in the cognitive domain, little has been done in physical, motor and fitness testing. This symposium will provide an overview of legal issues and principles of test accommodations. Effective assessment, decision-making processes, and reporting scores with an accommodated test will be described in detail. Finally, how to accommodate a standardized test will be illustrated.
