This symposium presents recent research that has advanced our understanding of the role of specialized content knowledge (SCK) in developing pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) of teachers. SCK is knowledge that is only needed for teaching, such as a teacher's knowledge of instructional tasks. Collectively, these studies provide new instruments and methods to assess SCK and PCK, and provide empirical evidence demonstrating the relationship between SCK and PCK.
