In 1991, San Diego State University professors James Sallis and Thomas McKenzie published Physical Education’s Role in Public Health in Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport (RQES). The article has subsequently become one of the most cited articles in the 80-year history of RQES (Cardinal & Thomas, 2005). The article’s 20th anniversary coincides with the 126th AAHPERD National Convention and Exposition in San Diego, CA. This serendipitous event provides a venue to explore physical education’s past and future role in public health.
