Background/Purpose . Maintenance of regular physical activity results from a combination of factors related to self efficacy, motivation and adherence. Dishman and Ickes (1981) developed a Self Motivation Inventory to measure exercise compliance that has been shown applicable to examine adherence to exercise in different groups. In order to further the possible application of this instrument the purpose of this study was to examine the reliability of a Spanish version of Dishman and Ickes' Self Motivation and Adherence to Exercise Inventory.

Method . Participants were 397 volunteer males (N = 206) and females (N = 191) native Spanish speakers age 18 to 76, engaging in regular leisure time PA in three metropolitan areas of Puerto Rico. The instrument was a Spanish version of the Self Motivation Inventory translated by a native speaker trained in exercise science and translated back into English by a professional translator to check for accuracy and grammar. Participants completed the inventory under the monitoring of a researcher after giving informed consent and before starting their exercise bout.

Analysis/Results . Data was checked for accuracy and scored according to the scale protocol correcting for negatively worded questions. Cronbach's alpha reliability was calculated using the Scale procedures in SPSS v. 17. Internal consistency reliability coefficients were .848 for males, .822 for females and .837 for the whole group.

Conclusions . These reliability values are within accepted guidelines for scale development and suggest that the Spanish version was reliable for use with this sample and possibly with other Spanish speaking groups.
