Ethics to Excellence: Pathway to True Competition |
Many athletes find that their best performance is facilitated by a commitment to purposes and values that are larger than the self. In this workshop, we present strategies for promoting excellence that build on self-transcending commitments. As part of this strategy, we discuss the differences between competition (understood as “striving with”) and decompetition (defined as “striving against”). While competition entails an enjoyable quest for excellence with opponents, decompetition aims at reaping extrinsic benefits through victory. |
