PURPOSE - to discuss students' perspectives about the benefits of experiential learning to becoming active researchers in HPERD.
METHODS - presenters will describe how student participation in research and training projects (Selma Nutrition, Exercise and Wellness Study [NEWS]; evaluating preservice education; community health fairs; Alabama Health Services Training Project; UAB Evidence-based Dentistry; & Life Space, Bladder and Bowel Control Project) yield immediate and long-term benefits that transcend classroom instruction.
RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS - tangible outcomes included learning to work with diverse audiences, implementing steps of comprehensive program planning models, testing concepts in real-world situations, applying a professional code of ethics, preparing to conduct independent inquiry, e.g. thesis/dissertation research, presenting scholarship in oral or written formats and learning grant writing skills. These outcomes enhance professional practice and opportunities for employment that are consistent with the responsibilities and competencies outlined by professional organizations.
