Service Learning: Linking Academic Coursework and School/Community Needs
This session will showcase a variety of service learning models implemented across a myriad of HPERD disciplines inside and outside of teacher education. Roundtable presentations will enable participants to view program examples while interacting with the presenters to discuss three critical elements of service learning: academic coursework, serving a need, and reflective practice. Presenters will highlight their means of evaluating efficacy of service learning. A crosswalk of standards specific to quality school-based and community-based service learning, NASPE and NCATE, is hoped to provide insight to the collective link of standards applied to service learning.
