Race, Sport, and Mythology: Constructions of Identity and Community |
The papers in this session provide a critical perspective on the use of sport to create and/or reflect community and identity, real or imagined. The mythology surrounding the Tarahumara Indian tribe-known for its endurance running prowess-and the research about the tribe in anthropology and exercise science will be examined. The tradition of Howard University's homecoming festivities, a nexus of sport, hip-hop and the black collegiate experience, will be explored. Drawing on gender, race, class, and political ideologies, the identity and affiliation within the Red Sox Nation community will be analyzed. |
