WHOSE SPORT IS IT ANYWAY? – The Effects Negatively Pushy Parents Have on Talented Children |
Children who display athletic talent at an early age have parents who fall into one of three categories; nurturing, neglectful, and negatively pushy. Of those three types, the negatively pushy parents run the greatest risk of causing long-term harm, either physical or psychological, to their talented offspring. Most programs developed by various youth sport organizations, although a step in the right direction, are geared toward socialization: modifying boorish parental behavior during practices and games/matches/meets. Intervention programs that identify negatively pushy parents, incorporating strategies to help parents and their talented children need to be developed and implemented. |
