Finding NEMO in Cortland County: Nutrition Environment and Menu Optimization |
This session will describe one piece of a community-university collaboration to address obesity and cardiovascular disease in a rural county of upstate New York. Working from a community organization framework, and employing social marketing principles, the collaborators sought to identify valuable, viable, and visible environmental changes to support its 5-A-Day and Low Fat Dairy recommendations. The presentation will describe needs assessment procedures and results; how they were used in issue selection; and describe the resulting intervention initiatives. Challenges and successes related to building social capital with restaurant owners and managers will be discussed. |
