Multidisciplinary Approach to Weight Management for Survivors of Sexual Abuse
The increasing obesity rate is an area of concern for school/community health educators, classroom teachers, fitness professionals, and health practitioners. This presentation provides an overview of the association between obesity and child sexual abuse (CSA). A model of intervention using a multidisciplinary approach to weight management addresses the need to identify psychosocial issues faced by this population. Participants will benefit by: 1) increasing awareness of the obesity-CSA association and 2) becoming more equipped to systematically address the link between CSA and food/weight-related issues within target populations. Recommendations will assist professionals in discussing eating/weight issues that may have roots in CSA.
