Developing Character through Sport
Youth and adolescent sports can contribute to the development of character, but only if coaches and parents teach, model, and reinforce the values that lead to playing fair and displaying sportsmanship. This session will describe social values, like cooperation and teamwork, and moral values, like integrity and respect, and provide specific strategies for how coaches and parents can help young people through their participation in competitive sports learn, understand, and live these values. Physical education teachers, coaches, and parents can benefit from this emphasis on the importance of stressing values associated with character in youth and adolescent sports.
