Advanced Level Certification: Health Educators Speak

Dixie L. Dennis, Austin Peay State University, Clarksville, TN, Kelly Bishop Alley, Alliance for Health Promotion, Indianapolis, IN, Amos O. Aduroja, Western Michigan University, Ypsilanti, MI and Linda Lysoby, NCHEC, Whitehall, PA

Results from the Competency Update Project (CUP)(1998-2004) indicated that health educators practice at both entry and advanced levels. Yet, only an entry level certification exam exists, with health educators pondering whether an advanced exam is warranted and, if so, "how" it should be accomplished. Therefore, in late summer and fall of 2006, the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. (NCHEC), who oversees credentialing of health educators, made available an online survey (via AAHE, SOPHE, and NCHEC links) to gather health educators' input regarding advanced credentialing, including level, eligibility, process, and intention preferences. The results of that survey will be presented to session attendees. Also, attendees of this session will be able to add further information about advanced credentialing criteria.
