An Analysis of a 5th Grade Adventure-Based Cooperative Physical Education Program on Life Effectiveness and Locus of Control

Joseph D. Culhane, Ball State University, Muncie, IN

The purpose of the study was to determine whether adventure-based cooperative physical education activities taught in a public school physical education setting results in positive student growth in the area of Life Effectiveness and Locus of Control. The participants consisted of 69 5th grades students, ages 10-11 years, from a single public elementary school. The students were instructed in 3 separate physical education classes by the same physical educator. All of the students received the same 12 lessons throughout the 8-week intervention program. The Review of Personal Effectiveness and Locus of Control (ROPELOC) instrument was administered by the physical educator at the beginning (pre-test) and end (post-test) of an 8-week cooperative physical education intervention program. All of the 69 students completed both the pre and post-tests. No significant improvement was found using the modified ROPELOC instrument for this 8-week cooperative physical education intervention program in the area of Life Effectiveness for this population of 69 5th grade students. However, the Wilks' Lambda statistic was found to be significant F (11, 58) = 2.04 (P=0.04). This indicated that at least one variable (Quality Seeking) of the 11 variables which encompass Life Effectiveness had a significant change in means from the pre-test to the post-test at (P<0.05) level of significance. The Quality Seeking variable was found to change significantly (F (1, 68) = 9.52 (P=0.01)). However, the Wilks' Lambda statistic for Overall Life Effectiveness was not found to be significant (F (1, 68) = 0.71 (P=0.40)). The Internal Locus of Control variable also resulted in no effect. The Wilks' Lambda statistic for Internal Locus of Control results were not found to be significant (F (1, 68) = 1.23 (P=0.27)). Finally, the results of External Locus of Control were also not found to be significant. The Wilks' Lambda statistic for External Locus of Control was found to have no effect (F (1, 68) = 1.83 (P=0.18)).
