Time Spent in Moderate and Vigorous Physical Activity During Marching Band Activities

Whitney K. Sharp, Danielle D. Wadsworth and David D. Pascoe, Auburn University, Auburn, AL

A large number of college students participate in marching band activities; however, information is limited on the performance requirements of marching band members, even though they perform over long periods of time and in extreme weather conditions. To effectively understand the energy costs of band members and determine appropriate exercise prescriptions it is necessary to evaluate physical activity (PA) participation during performance activities. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine time spent in moderate and vigorous PA by band members during a parade and game day conditions. Subjects consisted of 18 college band members who played a variety of musical instruments. PA was objectively measured with the BodyMedia SenseWear Pro2 Armband (BSPA) during an outdoor street parade and a collegiate football game. The BSPA is a continuous body monitoring device that measures PA and energy expenditure with five different sensors (accelerometer, galvanic skin response, heat flux, ambient air temperature and skin temperature). Individual weight plus instrument weight was used to calibrate the BSPA. Energy expenditure was measured each minute and converted to a MET value to determine time spent in moderate and vigorous PA. Moderate PA was classified as 3 to 5.99 METs and vigorous PA was greater than or equal to 6.0 METs. Mean moderate and vigorous PA was determined for preparade, parade, pregame and game activities. Results indicated that band members spent an average of 14.33±2.2 minutes engaged in moderate PA before the parade and 60.55±3.3 minutes during the parade. Mean vigorous PA before the parade was 1.7±.73 minutes and 12.66±3.27 minutes during the parade. Band members spent an average of 29.76±2.26 minutes engaged in moderate PA before the game and 41.44±8.47 minutes during the game. Mean vigorous PA before the game was 6.82±1.78 minutes and 2.58±.99 minutes during the game. PA participation appears to differ by band members' section and instrument. Parade PA was predominately continuous moderate PA with intermittent short bouts of vigorous PA. Average bout for parade activities was 30 minutes. Game day PA was predominately moderate PA lasting five minutes or less. Based upon these results, band members PA participation is different for a parade than a game condition and training regimens should reflect the band's predominant marching activity.
