Assessment of Oral Health Knowledge, Attitude and Behavior Among College Students

Piyali Roy, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Carbondale, IL

In Healthy People 2010 plan, section 21 focuses on oral health. Some of the goals are to reduce the proportion of young adults with untreated dental decay and periodontal diseases, increase the proportion of young adults who use the oral health care system in USA each year etc. Before implementing these plans, it is necessary to asses the target population's present level of knowledge, attitude and behavior towards oral health. College students are good representative of nation's young adult population. Purpose of the study - To assess oral health knowledge, attitudes and behaviors among American college students. Methods- The sample for this study was a cluster or intact group convenience sample, consisted of undergraduate and graduate students from the Southern Illinois University Carbondale. A paper survey, consisting of eight questions relating to oral health knowledge, thirteen attitudinal items using a 5 point Likert scale and thirteen behavioral questions, was developed- based on the literature review, American Dental Association website information. Survey was conducted in University Student Center and in classrooms. Results and Discussion- Male and female students both are at the same level of oral health knowledge –Mean: males 3.27, females 3.82 (highest possible score = 8). In general female students have better oral health behaviors and take care of their teeth (brush their teeth and visited their dentists more often) than their male peers. Females (55%) strongly agreed that having sound teeth and gums are necessary for them than males (46%). There was a significant difference between males (50%) and females (70%) responding in favor of brushing teeth at least twice a day(p= 0.021). 55% female students use the circular brushing strokes which is ADA recommended but only 39.6% males follow that method(p= 0.022). Only half of the students visit a dentist every 6 months for regular dental check-up. 12.5% male and 6.5% female students had never been taught brushing or flossing by any dentist or dental hygienist. Many studies already showed that dental caries is an infectious, transmissible disease. Caries-forming bacteria (e.g. Streptococcus mutans) can be transmitted from mother to child and due to kissing or exchange of saliva. But not a single student scored in this knowledge question. Learner Objectives: 1. Recognize the correct daily measures to be taken for oral health care and maintenance. 2. Assess the need for implementing oral health awareness programs and inclusion of the information in college health class curriculum.
