College and University Physical Education Professional Response to the National Obesity Epidemic; Strategies to Promote Wellness on Campus |
The significance of the nation's obesity epidemic is well documented, and as a results there has been much discussion on the importance of incorporating an activity based component of general education in college/university curriculum. Presently not all schools require a physical activity class as part of their general education. Thus, some students go through their entire college experience never having taken any physical activity or physical education class. This fact contributes to the prevalence of obesity. This session will discuss how college/university faculty are promoting the need for physical activity and potentially how they have incorporated physical activity into their general education course work. It will also discuss strategies to promote physical activity for undergraduates, as well as ways to overcome barriers and the types of barriers (budget restraints) encountered. |
