Diverse Voices: Passing the Baton |
The session will examine the profession in terms of voices - who speaks for who (historically White with a few African Americans)- as well as the type of activities (one that focuses largely on sport, but is becoming more inclusive to include physical activity, dance, other forms of movement)- with a look toward to future of the profession. By approaching the issues of diversity from these perspectives we hope to create space for new voices of diversity and a new, broader focus on movement diversity. We will conclude with a focus on the role of sociology, history and philosophy in preserving the past and leading the way to the future for students entering the profession. We will offer an inclusive panel of speakers who represent various diverse groups - gender, ethnicity,
class, religion, etc. - who could provide thoughts on how we can possibly engage the subdisciplines in larger ongoing dialogues related
to societal trends and changes. In many ways, we are offering a session that is similar to an all academy symposium, but one that focuses on the
often marginalized areas of the "social sciences" to address the broad topic of "diversity". |
