Physical Activity in the Lives of African-Americans: Key Factors for Successful Programs |
Health disparities disproportionately burden African-Americans (AA) and physical activity is a modifiable behavioral factor that may reduce this burden. This session will: 1) chronicle the role and impact of various forms of physical activity in the lives of AA from its African roots to present day; 2) explore physical activity in the form of work, sport, recreation, and the concept of disease prevention; and, 3) provide an in-depth perspective on key factors such as “the messenger,” spirituality, cultural mistrust, economics, and cultural competency that will lay the foundation from which to build meaningful, successful, and enduring programs in AA communities. |
