Moving Messages: Integrating American Sign Language and Modern Dance Gesture |
Intended for the dance educator, choreographer, or performer interested in experimental approaches to dance composition, this presentation will describe the process used to create a dance piece integrating modern dance gesture and American Sign Language (ASL). The dance piece illustrates the expressive similarities between the codified language of ASL and the uncodified gestures of modern dance. The presentation will include discussion of the various stages of the choreographic process and a live performance of the final work. The session will provide attendees the opportunity to discuss the many possibilities for integrating the expressive movement forms of ASL and modern dance. |
