The Elusive Elephant in the Locker Room: Creating Positive Climates for Lesbian and Gay Youth in Physical Education and Sport |
Homophobia/homonegativism in sport has been referred to as “the silence so loud it screams” (Nelson, 1991). Recent research (Krane & Barber, in press) indicates that this silence continues today. Additionally, many teachers and coaches lack resources or knowledge about how to counteract homonegativism. Thus, this session will provide a theory-to-practice approach to dealing with issues surrounding sexual orientation in physical education and sport. Social identity perspective will frame the discussion about creating safe and productive climates in physical activity settings. Case studies dealing with sexual orientation in physical activity settings will explore practical interventions. |
