Dr. Doris R. Corbett has been selected as the 2005 NAGWS Rachel Bryant Lecturer. She will present "A Revival of Ethical Behavior Through Sport."
Corbett received a Bachelor of Science from North Carolina College, a Master of Science Degree from North Carolina Central University and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Maryland. She has been at Howard University since the fall of 1972 where she is the Director of the Graduate Program in Health, Human Performance, and Leisure Studies, and is an Associate Professor of Sport Studies.
Among her many positions of leadership, she has been president of AAHPERD, president of NAGWS, president of the District of Columbia AHPERD, president of the Eastern District AHPERD, the first American to serve as the international vice-president of ICHPER-SD and the first African American professional to serve as president for ICHPER-SD in the council’s 40-year history.
She has traveled to over 40 states, delivered more than 150 keynote addresses throughout the continental United States and in 17 countries throughout the world; one of the most notable was delivering an invited presentation at the International Olympic Committee’s historical Women and Sport Conference in Lausanne, Switzerland (October, 1996). She has also conducted workshops, seminars, or delivered keynote or main addresses in the Republic of China - Taipei, Taiwan; The Peoples Republic of China - Beijing; London, England; Vancouver, Canada; San Jose, Greece, Egypt, Jamaica and Costa Rica.
Corbett’s honors include the Charles D. Henry Award, the R. Tait McKenzie Award, the NAGWS Pathfinder Award, AAHPERD’s prestigious Luther Halsey Gulick Award, Honor Award, E.B. Henderson Award, and the NAGWS Nell Jackson Memorial Award.
Additionally, she is the author of numerous referred journal articles, and chapter publications that focus on ethics and human rights in sport and physical activity, and women in sport. She is the author/co-author of two books: Outstanding Athletes of Congress, Unique Games and Sports Around the World, and a Monograph Social Impact of Distance Learning in Higher Education on Health, Physical Education and Recreation Students.
