Professional Issues Colloquium: Ethics in Research—The Giant has Awakened |
It has been 10 years since publication of the Academy Papers on Ethics in the Study of Physical Activity. The subheading of the present session is implied in Safrit’s article, "Oh What a Tangled Web We Weave". It is timely to revisit the topic of ethics in research. Over the last several years, many individuals who serve as editors, associate editors, and reviewers for journals, as well as reviewers of abstracts submitted for conference presentations, encounter ethical issues. These issues have been primarily ones of plagiarism, multiple submission, and fragmented publication. However, other issues such as accuracy of references, fabrication of data, and authorship credit are also relevant. Dealing with ethical issues is a time and energy consuming process, and the consequences are indeed far-reaching. The three session participants will offer reflections and insights on the topic of ethics in our field. All were editors and authors of the Academy Papers on Ethics in the Study of Physical Activity, have been editors of major kinesiology journals, and have held major leadership positions in our professional organizations. |
