School Safety |
This two part session focuses on safety in schools. The first topic addresses an initiative to provide training and curricular materials in order to establish safety education in elementary school, reinforcing with first aid in middle and CPR/AED skills in high schools. Teachers become instructors, schools develop emergency preparedness plans for disaster management and establish statewide networks for safety. The second topic is an overview of how personal safety and self-defense training courses can be incorporated into an existing health studies course. Discussion will include the appropriateness, importance, legitimacy, and liability concerns of offering personal safety or self-defense training in different education levels. Specific examples and successful programs will be discussed. |
