Open to all NAGWS and WSF members. Both the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport and the Women's Sports Foundation rely on research data to dispel myths and educate the public about the benefits of sport participation, active lifestyles for females, and the role of women in sport leadership. To help recognize the importance of research and pay tribute to leaders in the research arena, the Women's Sports Foundation has developed the Darlene A. Kluka Women's Sports and Activity Research Award. This award is presented each year at the NAGWS/WSF Joint Reception at the AAHPERD Convention.
The recipient of this years Darlene A. Kluka Women's Sports and Activity Research Award is Mary Jo Kane. Dr. Kane is a professor in the School of Kinesiology and the Director of the Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota. The Tucker Center is the first and only university-based research institute in the nation. In 1996, Professor Kane was awarded the first Distinguished Professorship related to women in sport: The Dorothy McNeill Tucker Chair for Women in Sport & Exercise Science. Dr. Kane was also recently elected by her peers as a Fellow in the American Academy of Kinesiology, the highest honor in her field.
