Enhancing Dance Performance Through the Application of Physical Acting Techniques |
This session presents teaching approaches to enhance the performance ability of dancers by focusing on the inner life of movements. Using guided imagery, we work through several stages. First, we find a neutral, unmannered body posture. Then, after learning a short choreographic phrase, we explore physical metaphors that the dancers embody to bring a role alive. We then work for selection and mastery of these physical choices so that the dancer creates an internal “script” that brings the choreography fully to life. The goal is for dancers to know what their intention or motivation is at each moment in performance. |
