The Relationships of the Female Athlete Triad (FAT) with Psychomotor and Affective Functions |
Many athletes with disordered eating have compromised mental-cognitive, emotional, and physical states. Emotional disturbances related to body distortion, low self-esteem, compulsiveness, or dichotomous thinking can severely interfere with the individual's daily life functioning. In addition, impaired general self-perception may prevent the individual from performing tasks up to her potential and may cause the athlete to withdraw from her sport. A dysfunctional hypothalamus influences memory and decision-making abilities as well as motor control, particularly balance. Performance of college female athletes (N = 50) on a series of psychomotor tests is discussed and recommendations for coaches are made. |
