Assessment of a Campus Sport Recreation Program

Robert Lindsey and Gene Sessoms, College of Charleston, Charleston, SC

Given the stressors that college students have to deal with, having some kind of recreational activity may be an excellent means of decreasing alcohol and other drug use as well as relieving stress. One trackable means of recreational activity is intramural sports. The goal of intramural sports is to provide an opportunity for individuals to be able to participate without concern for winning or losing. Reasons for participation in recreation sports include: First, intramural sports are important because they provide individuals with a means of obtaining physical activity; Second, physical fitness has direct moral implications; and Third, intramural sports are fun and enhance social skills. Participation in recreation sports has been shown to have a major impact on the emotional, moral, social, physical, and intellectual abilities of their student members (Miller & Jones, 1981). The purpose of this study was to assess campus recreation sport programs at a southeastern university. Subjects for the study included students in General Education Courses and Physical Education and Health classes. Data was collected utilizing a modified version of the Quality and Importance of Recreational Services survey. Factors such as the availability of recreational facilities/programs, satisfaction with different aspects of the program, and the health related benefits will be discussed.
