PSAHPERD Closing General Session: Sonny Hill, Ambassador of Sport |
William R. “Sonny” Hill has been referred to as the “Mayor of Basketball” in Philadelphia over the likes of Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Charles Barkley, and Allen Iverson by Slam Magazine in its September 2000 edition. Sonny’s influence goes beyond the basketball court having co-founded the Charles Baker Memorial Summer League for professionals to stay challenged and in shape in the off season and the Sonny Hill Community Involvement League for youth as an alternative to the challenges of the street. The Baker League is the oldest and most prestigious professional league in the country and the Sonny Hill League has done more to battle the perils of gangs and drugs and promote life skills than any other program in the city. Sonny believes in Basketball as a means to an end, not an end in itself. Sonny’s multifaceted involvement in basketball is what affords him the capacity to rub shoulders with the elite of the NBA as well as still connect with the youth of today. Sonny was a player, coach, and owner of various teams; he was a color analyst for CBS sports and the Philadelphia 76ers; was featured in the NFL film, “Ten Feet in the Air”, and has been honored with over 25 civic awards including “Man of the Year.” While still involving himself in the day-to-day operations of both leagues, he currently hosts a weekly radio show on WIP Sports Talk Radio and is the executive adviser to the President of the First Union Complex and the President of the 76ers. PSAHPERD is proud to introduce to the rest of the country our very own Ambassador of Sport, Mr. Sonny Hill. |
