The Good:
The lecture will begin with a brief history of Title IX, featuring a review of the law and important events in its interpretation. I will focus on the impact of Title IX on all levels of women's sports, including statistics on increased opportunities, budgets, participation rates, and levels of support.
The Bad:
I will pay particular attention to the current threats to gender equity in sports, based on the recent hearings of the Commission on Opportunities in Athletics. I will preview the recommendations from the Commission, which will not be made public until January 2003, and discuss the implications of the recommendations for the interpretation of Title IX.
The Ugly:
Of special concern will be the implications of the Commission's recommendations that could slow our progress toward gender equity and indeed reverse the forward momentum that Title IX has achieved for girls and women athletes. I will discuss my perceptions of the challenges that lie ahead and conclude the lecture with some reflections about the advocacy efforts needed to maintain and strengthen Title IX. |
